Chapter Thirteen

Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind

The wedding was beautiful and the reception couldn’t have been more perfect if they had tried. The weather was just right, so some people could eat outside if they chose, and the sun was shining. The guests mingled and fellowshipped until late in the afternoon.

After most people had left, Benjamin, Franz, and Frederick approached Adelaide. “Is there something we can do to help?” Benjamin asked.

Adelaide glanced up at them, a flustered look on her face. “Um, we need to get all the food put away and dishes done.”

Franz picked up a stack of plates. “That I can do quite well.”

They entered the kitchen together with stacks of plates and dishes. Joanna, an apron over her dress, Eve, and Evangeline were all talking and giggling as they made up plates of leftover goodies.

Franz set his burden down and nabbed a piece of chocolate cake.

Eve turned on him with a glare. “Are you a boy or a full-grown man? I would have thought your mother would have at least taught you some manners. Apparently I was wrong.”

Franz grinned. “Please, Ma’am, may I have some cake?” His mouth was full of cake and it sounded more like, “Pease, Mm, mm ah have ohm ’ake?”

Eve closed her eyes and took a deep breath. “I don’t think I have a choice. But I’ll be sure to hide the rest of the cake before you get back in here. Now shoo! Go back outside.”

Franz swallowed. “I’m just trying to help.”

“With what?”

“Getting rid of the cake.”

“Ha!” Eve exclaimed. “You did do that, but how do you know I didn’t have plans for the cake?”

“Like what?” Franz asked.

Benjamin and Frederick came back in. “Like bringing it to some of the elderly who couldn’t make it to church and missed the wedding,” Benjamin said. “Joanna and I were going to ask if you all wanted to come help us deliver the plates of food.”

Franz gulped down the last bite of his cake. “I would like to join you. And not just to pay penance for eating it.”

Eve smiled. “Thank you, Franz. I was actually going to offer a piece of the cake to each of those who helped anyway, so you’ve just forfeited yours for later is all.”

Franz shook his head. “Thank you, Miss Eve.”

An hour later, everything was cleaned up and they split up into two fivesomes. Joanna, Benjamin, Evangeline, Frederick, and Mr. Reese went to three homes; and Eve, Franz, Adelaide, Elizabeth, and Lane went to the other three.

On the way back, Eve looked over at Adelaide. “We aren’t making you feel awkward, are we?”

Adelaide shook her head. “No. I’m enjoying watching you four.”

Elizabeth scrunched her eyebrows together. “What are you watching?”

Adelaide smiled. “Love budding in the two couples. It is nice to see.”

“Haven’t you seen it before?” Franz asked.

“Not much. A lot of my friends married for money or because they wanted to get out of their family’s house. They weren’t worried about love. I saw a lot of them grow old before their time because of it, too.
