Chapter Thirteen
Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind
The wedding was beautiful and the reception couldnât have been more perfect if they had tried. The weather was just right, so some people could eat outside if they chose, and the sun was shining. The guests mingled and fellowshipped until late in the afternoon.
After most people had left, Benjamin, Franz, and Frederick approached Adelaide. âIs there something we can do to help?â Benjamin asked.
Adelaide glanced up at them, a flustered look on her face. âUm, we need to get all the food put away and dishes done.â
Franz picked up a stack of plates. âThat I can do quite well.â
They entered the kitchen together with stacks of plates and dishes. Joanna, an apron over her dress, Eve, and Evangeline were all talking and giggling as they made up plates of leftover goodies.
Franz set his burden down and nabbed a piece of chocolate cake.
Eve turned on him with a glare. âAre you a boy or a full-grown man? I would have thought your mother would have at least taught you some manners. Apparently I was wrong.â
Franz grinned. âPlease, Maâam, may I have some cake?â His mouth was full of cake and it sounded more like, âPease, Mm, mm ah have ohm âake?â
Eve closed her eyes and took a deep breath. âI donât think I have a choice. But Iâll be sure to hide the rest of the cake before you get back in here. Now shoo! Go back outside.â
Franz swallowed. âIâm just trying to help.â
âWith what?â
âGetting rid of the cake.â
âHa!â Eve exclaimed. âYou did do that, but how do you know I didnât have plans for the cake?â
âLike what?â Franz asked.
Benjamin and Frederick came back in. âLike bringing it to some of the elderly who couldnât make it to church and missed the wedding,â Benjamin said. âJoanna and I were going to ask if you all wanted to come help us deliver the plates of food.â
Franz gulped down the last bite of his cake. âI would like to join you. And not just to pay penance for eating it.â
Eve smiled. âThank you, Franz. I was actually going to offer a piece of the cake to each of those who helped anyway, so youâve just forfeited yours for later is all.â
Franz shook his head. âThank you, Miss Eve.â
An hour later, everything was cleaned up and they split up into two fivesomes. Joanna, Benjamin, Evangeline, Frederick, and Mr. Reese went to three homes; and Eve, Franz, Adelaide, Elizabeth, and Lane went to the other three.
On the way back, Eve looked over at Adelaide. âWe arenât making you feel awkward, are we?â
Adelaide shook her head. âNo. Iâm enjoying watching you four.â
Elizabeth scrunched her eyebrows together. âWhat are you watching?â
Adelaide smiled. âLove budding in the two couples. It is nice to see.â
âHavenât you seen it before?â Franz asked.
âNot much. A lot of my friends married for money or because they wanted to get out of their familyâs house. They werenât worried about love. I saw a lot of them grow old before their time because of it, too.
